Have YOU sailed out of sight of land? Tell me about it in the comments below! (Or if ya wanna get jiggy with it, leave me a voicemail!)
So, have you ever sailed out of sight of land? And how far from land is that, anyway?
Apparently since the Earth is a sphere, there could be some trigonometry involved. But in Florida, you can be out of sight of shoreside palm trees in about seven nautical miles.
By a dozen miles, even the highrise condos and cell towers disappear, along with cell service. (Something that I find kinda nice.)
The first time I sailed out of sight of land was heading toward the Florida Keys from Boca Grande.
And not only was I alone, but it was overnight. With thunderstorms all about. I don’t remember really being worried about not seeing land (it was nighttime after all)…and I don’t remember being too concerned about being alone, either. I guess the thunderstorms kinda had my attention.

And I remember the most beautiful dawn, and motoring south across a glassy calm sea under clear skies, with nothing but water for 360 degrees…among dolphins and turtles…and plenty of crab pots.
What about you?
Have you sailed out of sight of land? How did it make you feel? And were you alone, or who were you with?
I’d love to hear from you at bradford@hownottosail.com…or leave a comment below…or a voicemail at…HowNotToSail.com/hotline.
What could possibly go wrong?
